A Rhetoric-Free Zone

- As a lifelong Citizen of Hillsborough County, the mother of two children actually in our public schools and educator of hundreds more, Melissa Hernandez has the
perspective our School Board needs to make the right decisions for the future of Public Education in the district.
- The eight year incumbent has voted to turn off the television cameras during the audience participation portion of public school board meetings, closing off the open
line of communication directly to the public viewing at home. Tax paying citizens were silenced.
- This approach was initiated in April, when the school board voted by majority to name a new school in the Lithia/FishHawk area, JOE E. NEWSOME High, despite a
huge protest (including media coverage a massive letter writing campaign and petition signatures ) from community members urging the school board to allow them to
name their own school, FishHawk High. The public was ignored.
- Following this path, the current school board policy allows only board appointed committee members to actively participate in school boundary issues. Generally, the
public is permitted to attend these meetings, but they may not speak to the issue. Communities want to participate, but they are not permitted to do so.
- Fortunately for The Citizens & especially the Children of Hillsborough County, 2002 is an election year! On November 5th, during the General Election, We The People,
have the opportunity to put the public back in public education! Vote for your Voice on the Board! Elect public servants who pledge to amplify our voice not silence it!
